Maximilianstraße 61 · Kaffeegäßchen 2

An old house.
A new chapter.

Before brunch and tapas, there were centuries of city life. The house behind Max61 connects Augsburg’s Maxstraße with Kaffeegäßchen — and a history that reaches back some 500 years.

Around 1526

The story begins in the structure.

The Bavarian heritage register dates the building’s core to around 1526, based on tree-ring analysis. It records Kaffeegäßchen 2 as a listed town house. This date describes the older fabric of the building, rather than the age of every visible detail. [1]

18th & 19th centuries

A house shaped by time.

According to the same register, the exterior appearance reflects the 18th and 19th centuries. Four storeys, a pitched roof and a shallow bay window are among its recorded features. The house combines layers from different periods. [1]

Kaffeegäßchen

A little lane with a coffee-house past.

The Augsburg city encyclopaedia traces the lane’s name to its position between the former Erzberger and Blosfeld coffee houses. It was also known as Hofmannsgässchen, after coffee-house owner Otto Wilhelm Hofmann. The name preserves a small piece of the neighbourhood’s social history. [2]

Then & tomorrow

A house that has welcomed guests for generations.

This house once welcomed guests for more than an evening — they could stay the night, too. That chapter is linked to the former “Bavaria” restaurant. From 2027, the upper floors are set to welcome overnight guests again: settle in and stay a little longer. [4]

More recent history

Part of Augsburg’s nightlife.

The local history collection “Amerika in Augsburg” records a bar at Kaffeegäßchen 2 among venues associated with American soldiers in Augsburg. This connects the address with the city’s bar scene and nightlife — another chapter in its history as a place to meet. [3]

Today

Look up. Stay a little longer.

The high stucco ceiling gives Max61 its distinctive atmosphere. Today, Brunch Society welcomes you during the day and Tapaso in the evening: two menus, one shared space. A new gathering place within an old house.

Looking ahead · 2027

A new chapter on the upper floors.

The upper floors are currently being renovated to welcome overnight guests in the future. These spaces are planned to open in 2027. The renovation concerns the upper floors, not Max61: Brunch Society and Tapaso continue to welcome you as usual.

Current plans provided by the operator · November 2026.
